The narrow-gauge line from Kalka to Shimla climbs 1,400 metres in 96 kilometres, through 102 tunnels and over more than 800 bridges.

Built to carry the summer government up the hill, it now carries tourists, students and people who work in Solan and live in Shimla.

The station master at Barog has worked the line for 24 years. He says the view has not changed; the phones in every passenger's hand have.
