The tower that stood: Chehni Kothi

A centuries-old tower in the Banjar valley, built of stone and cedar, has outlasted every earthquake it has met.

Chehni Kothi rises above its village like a lighthouse, a tall tower of stone and timber that can be seen from across the valley.

It was built in the kath-kuni way, with courses of stone and deodar and no mortar. The earthquakes that brought down newer buildings in the valley left it standing.

The tower is reached by a steep path from the road at Bahu. The upper floors belong to the village deity and are closed to visitors.

Villagers repair the roof together when it needs it, and say the tower will outlast the road.
